This Is What a Year’s Worth of Makeup Looks Like

When I was 13, my dear mama tried to prepare me for a proper Adult Lady Beauty Regimen with a visit from her Mary Kay salesgal. Sitting at our breakfast room table, I took stock of all the foundations, powders, shadows, blushes and lipsticks spread before me and was remember feeling exhausted at the sight. Painstakingly, the Mary Kay rep — her face visibly shelacked in full makeup and an impressive rainbow of vibrant color below her brow — applied a full coating of makeup to my face, and I’ve pretty much been wearing cosmetics ever since. Not that I go through the entire primer, foundation, powder, etc. process every day, but it’s rare that I leave the house for work or socializing without mascara on (gotta make those peepers pop – am I right, ladies?).

In fact, I probably wouldn’t be able to even open my eyes if I applied a year’s-worth of mascara to my lashes, judging by this “Natural Beauty” video. For a not-so-lovely visual of just how much makeup women cake on their faces ever year, two makeup artists slathered 365 coats of makeup on the model over the course of nine hours.

From Nowness: “Magic ingredients: Seven bottles of Foundation S103; two bottles of Creamy Eyes E107; three Milky Lips L205 pens; and two bottles of Blush S301. All together 228.40ml of makeup.” I’m not sure if I could use up seven bottles of foundation in a decade, much less a year. Still, I’m sure that a year’s-worth of makeup I wear especially now that I crank out multiple YouTube videos every week would be similarly startling.

That Nowness video is just over 3 minutes long, but how much time do real-world women devote to beauty maintenance? Approximately a whole bunch o’ minutes:

And, finally, how much money are we spending to doll up so often? In fancy economic speak: a lot. One UK cosmetics company estimates women spend around $400 annually on makeup, while a YMCA report on the beauty industry puts the cosmetics costs even higher at $100 per month.  And over a lifetime, makeup-wearing women like myself dish out $15,000 on cosmetics, including spent $3,770 on mascara alone.

Permanent makeup tattoos, anyone?
